Been a long time since ive been on this forum,
My uncle has a 09 street glide that has a ticking sound.
the sound seems to be present above 2000RPM. The sound is heard almost exactly when you go through the 2000RPM range. The ticking is there whether the bike is in gear or neutral. It sounds as if its coming from the left side of the engine but Im having a heck of a time finding the issue. Doesnt matter if the bike is under load or just reving the engine. When the RPM go down lower than 2000RPM decreasing you cant hear anymore. The sound changes speed relative to engine speed. IE when you REV engine ticking gets faster. I have installed adjutable push rods, new lifters, cam chain tensioners, Aftermarket Oil pressure bypass valve. Everyone kept saying it was valve train noise but I have almost replaced all of valve train :( I checked for exhaust leak as well. Im desperate for a fix as my uncle is now 70 years old and will want to sell soon. Should I post a sound clip? not sure how but it might help

How many miles on the bike? When did you install adjustable pushrods? What was last modification prior to the commencement of the ticking? What pushrods/lifters were installed? What preload was set on the lifters?
 
Oh man
Hard questions. Not sure I can remember. Bike has 30000 KMs
No mods done to bike then ticking started all of a sudden. I did some basic troubleshooting then brought bike to very reputable private HD mechanic. He replaced the pushrods with adjustables, lifters, cam chain tensioners. Uncle picked up bike and didn't initially hear ticking (he's a bit deaf) so took it home and ticking still present after all those parts were "thrown at it".
I know you will say if he's reputable he should be able to sort it out but uncle doesn't have the cash to keep throwing at it.
I didn't do the work myself as I had zero time. Been a year in storage and got it out for a few rides so far and just can't bear the sound
So to sum up
Ticking was present prior to parts being installed
I am very mech inclined and am open to sugestions to check
I currently have primary off
I slacked off chain and visually checked copensator for play and found none
 
More troubleshooting last night
Removed primary cover and chain was very tight. I loosened it off and readjusted to allow the tensioner to re tension. When I put cover back on and filled with oil I started it and the same sound was there. I removed the primary cover and drained oil and the chain tension appeared to be normal. I decided to run the bike with cover off and no oil and it seems as though the noise is not there. Or deffinatly very less noise is there
I am using HD Formula+ primary oil

YOU better get to checking some bearings in there especially the Inner Primary Bearing.
A excessively tight chain is notorious for taking out primary bearings.
 
Just pulled the clutch side and rotor side off to inspect. Clutch side bearing looks great. Smooth no damage. Can't see primary side bearing but I gave the output shaft a good lateral and up and down rock and its solid.
Not sure how to inspect inner bearing. Thru cam side?
The compensator was clean. No damage or scoring anywhere and the discs are intact
What about oil. Any suggestion
Thinner?
Thicker?

On my EG the bearing surface of IPB flacked off. I was told that the failure was no fault of my own. I coasted down hill engine off in neutral, and it sounded as if a truck with mudder tires were following close by. Then bike went to dealer.
Did you notice on inside of primary cover any scrapping marks perhaps?

Outer case is clean. No damage. There is very slight damage/wear mark on the clutch side inner case where the starter flywheel looks like it was rubbing at some point but I checked with feeler gauge and there's clearance there. Any thoughts on oil?
 
I had a similar situation hearing what sounded like a top end engine noise at a certain RPM. Then one day while riding and hearing the noise I put my finger on the gas cap and the noise stopped. The chrome cover on the gas cap was vibrating at a certain RPM. fixed the gas cap and no more noise.
