Anything worth seeing Rt66 St.Louis to Chicago??

Planning to take on the HOG Route 66 ride in sept, but we live near Springfield, MO and don't really want to back track I-44, and I-55 if there isn't much to see on those legs. Thinking about taking the pussy trip and just jumping on in Springfield. Springfield to LA is really the portion of 66 that my wife and I want to explore.

Please give me input, good or BAD

I live in IL. I can't imaging there being anything great. A lot of small towns maybe. I know I-55 sure is boring. The river road is the major scenic road.

There are the Illinois Giants along the way but that is a long back track. When you head out make sure you get off in Joplin and cut the little corner in Kansas.
