anybody ever run into a deer with your motorcycle and live to talk
about it? i saw the post about the bugs, and they are brutal to run
into, but what about a deer? I am a relatively new rider and i am
going to start riding to work in the morning 5:30 am. I have hit
7 deer in the past two years in my car and am worried about hitting
one on my bike. i have seen the electronic deer repeller on the
internet but don't know anybody that has used one. any info
greatly appreciated.

Knock on wood haven't hit a deer. But last week while riding home after dark (looking out for deer) I bumped a porcupine it hit the floor boards and the side of my boot, ended up with about 20 quills in my boot, none threw to the flesh, wow!
 
I've hit 3 dogs and a cat.:wall Never a deer but I almost hit a moose on a mountain gravel road. I'm glad it was a baby and not a ticked off mother!!!
 
Came within about 25 feet of a buffalo. I was more worried about him hitting me than me hitting him.

I haven't but I thought I read a thread out here from someone that did last year and got banged up pretty good. I think she's still going thru rehab on a pretty busted up leg or something.

Knock on wood. Hope I never do.
 
For starters, don't over drive your headlight. Slow down when it's dark.

Most people are looking for the whole deer when they're looking for deer. The majority of the time if you see the deer it's too late. Scan far ahead for small white spots on the sides of the road, that will be deer eyes or some other critter. Slow down and be extra alert.

And if you happen to see a doe or does run across the road in front of you in mating season, slow down, normally a buck will be in hot pursuit and will soon cross the road as well.

I was on a HOG chapter ride last summer riding about 5th or 6th in the group. This was when the corn fields were at the full height.

Deer popped out of the field and literally leapt right in front of the road captain (he's also our safety capt and a darn good one). Kudos to him for not panicking. He kept right on rollin as there just wasn't anything he could've done had the deer decided to run in front of him instead of jumping over his path.

It was pretty wicked. When we stopped for a break and we were talking about him, he said it scared the livin *bleep* out of him but he knew that his best bet was to just keep riding.

Oh, and this was in the middle of the afternoon!
 
I have never actually hit one but since I go off to work at 4 in the morning I have had numerous close calls. One morning I had a doe run along beside me and she was so close that if I had wanted to I could have reached out and touched her. I expected her at any minute to run into me. I have a buddy who was riding one night and had one jump over him. It's foot hit his helmet and cracked it slightly. Needless to say he and I are alot more cautious .

My sister-in-law hit one two years ago on her Street Glide. It was still light out but it was at a place where there are almost always deer around.

She didn't go down but the deer ended up riding with her until she got stopped. She was doing about 30 MPH. The deer ran off.

Her engine guard and forks got bent and had to be replaced. No injuries to her. Very lucky.
