I have a 97 Custom softail and other day i lost my low beam, so I have been riding on high beam, now I got on it heading out of town the other night and watched my headlight slowly go dim until i let off the throtle the got the light back. Not sure what it may be, stator, voltage reg. or maybe battery?

Have you checked the self help area for tests ?

Open the headlamp shell and check the connector. I have seen these get burnt due to a poor connection.
This is the first thing i would do as it's an easy check.

Both Glider (of course) and Robbiemac should get you on track...it also helps to have a rough schematic (or the real thing of course) which should be SIMILAR to this to help you troubleshoot...

Easy stuff first, make sure the connector is not loose.
