I have a 2002 FLHTC with 70k miles and I hear a lot of clicking sounds coming from the right side of the engine that are in sync with the RPM. I'm thinking maybe one or more lifters are faulty. The bike runs fine, just a little noisier than a year ago. Any ideas out there? Can one tell if a lifter is bad just by looking at it?

REMEMBER to check the Shoes.... That is a sound they make when meta to metal begins..

Have they been changed or looked at???

70,000 miles is a lot IF never checked... They can go out at any mileage but if not replaced or converted over to the Newer style?????

If you're referring to the cam chain tensioner shoes, yes they were changed at 60k miles and new cam bearings. Now that I think of it, the noise started when I switched to Syn3 engine oil. I wonder????
 
It's not unusual for these things to be noisier with synthetic oil. They're getting the same level protection, but synthetics are generally thinner in their natural state and nowhere near as good at deadening mechanical noises.

Got to agree here as syn will be more slippery over all and provide better lubing at all RPMS with less break down in the higher heat Thermal break down sometimes known as coking the oil, not cooking :s
 
Wow, just got back from a ride after draining the Syn3 and refilling with HD50 weight regular oil. All the noise is gone! No more Syn3 for me. I prefer a quiter engine. I also ride in the desert, so the heavy oil is OK.

You might try some of the heavy single weight FULL synthetics next time around. Since you ride in high heat environments, the synthetics are more temperature stability, so you may get better protection out of them.
