ok, in all of my wisdom and glory i used a pair of channel locks to pull the bulb out when i couldnt get it out with my fingers. most of you can guess the results. is there anyway short of replacing the socket to get remaining bulb out?

Try a pick tool and some WD40
 
Dental pick or piece of 18 gauge wire.You can also buy the whole assembly on ebay pretty reasonably.
 
i thought i did last time i replaced it...guess not....i know its my friend. thanks jack.
