DETROIT (AP) — Under pressure from U.S. safety regulators, Harley-Davidson is recalling nearly 175,000 motorcycles because the brakes might fail.

The U.S. recall covers more than 30 models from the 2008 through 2011 model years. Harley says deposits can form on brake parts if the fluid isn’t changed every two years as specified in the owner’s manual. That can cause a valve in the antilock brake control unit to stick.

The U.S. government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating problems in July of 2016 after getting 43 complaints including three reports of crashes and two injuries.

Read about this this morning, so I guess the Company will notify us if our bikes are affected. Let's see how long that takes.

Related our new F150 in under recall for doors no staying closed, been waiting over 6mos!!!

We have been hearing rider complaints of "rock hard" antilock brake levers for some time. Enough owners complained to the right people finally.

That reminds me, I need to change my brake fluid this spring. Glad I didn't get the ABS equipped bike.

I'll bet they are not happy that this turned into a recall, pronounced "their cost", instead of the owner having to pay. Cars with ABS go over 100K miles without having to change the brake fluid.

Well that could be a problem if you wanted to keep your spouse. :O LOL (Let alone yourself!!!)

Ha,ha,ha use the seats belts all the time just in case.
On my explorer there is an option that lets you turn the seat belt dinger off, almost a way to encourage non use. hmmm!

I have a tester that shows moisture content in brake fluid.
But rule of thumb is if it is changing color, clear to shaded yellow it needs to be replaced.
When dark to black then high moisture and rubber debris from the hoses and caliper / wheel cylinder seals.

I may be naive and sound like a whinner but here is my story. I bought a brand new 2010 Road King off the floor and the service department or the manual that came with the bike never stated anything about maintenance to the brake fluid. I even went back to the dealer in 2015 and asked about it. He said no need to change fluid. OK.... so a couple of months ago I get the bulletin to go in asap to a Harley dealer and get the fluid changed. That's fine I'm glad they sent out the bulletin, so I got the brake system flushed on Jan 22 2018 and low and behold two weeks later I get this news of a recall and they will flush brake fluid for free. What the (EDIT)? I talked to the Harley dealer and he said I'm probably out of luck getting my $250 back. I wouldn't really care except HD SENT OUT THE BULLETIN TO COME IN! Now they are going to flush my system that has only 5 miles on it to install new improved fluid? I know it's an eight year old bike just would have felt better if I had done the work last year. I love my Road King, never have had a single problem with it
