Inner primary bearing and shaft

I was told that I have to replace my inner primary main shaft and bearings is this a big deal or is the dealership making it worst than what it sounds. Have 17400 on 08 Ultra

Bearing, no. But shaft, YES - a very big deal!!

Why are they saying the shaft needs to be replaced? There is a race on the shaft that may have to be replaced if the bearing has nuked and damaged it, but the shaft itself? Tell us what happened.

The main shaft is part of the gearbox and requires a full gearbox strip and rebuild to replace it
