My Battery research for 2018

FYI
Battery numbers below are for Dynas and some Softails.......

I like Deka and East Penn but my Switchback has a Thundermax computer and they are very voltage sensative during start. After charging and installing my new Deka ETX-20L the bike would not start. I sent the data to Thundermax and the reported back that my battery voltage was down to 7.8 volts after only 3 revolutions. Its toast. The minimum crank voltage should be no lower the 9 volts. So I will send it back.
I spent hours looking at other batteries on the harley forums. Most are 310 cold crank amps. I did see that Interstate has one rated at 320 cca. On guy with a softail took his one year old interstate to the dealer and had the cold crank checked and it put out 340 amps. So That looks like it would be a good choice. One guy on the forums had the same problem I did with a new DEKA and switched over to an INTERSTATE battery and is very happy with it. The interstate part number is FAGYZ20HL for most Dynas and some Softails . It looks to my like its made by YUASA and is idenical to the Yuasa YTX20L-BS. Both made in Pennslvainia. I am now concerned with DEKA quality control.
I went for an experiment and bought a BRAILLE b2015 battery from Summit Racing. Cold Crank is 425. Its AGM and only time will tell how it holds up. $199.
Expensive but I believe sometimes you get what you pay for. Direct fit. I will report back when I test the cold crank.

I am done with lead acid batteries and gone to lithium iron units. Shave about 20 pounds off the weight of the bike and for about $40 more than what the OP paid for a lead acid battery, he could have had a Twin Power, direct fit/connect lithium battery that delivers 625CCA that will out last the lead acid battery by at least one year, maybe two.

If sticking with lead acid batteries, 400CCA should be the minimum rating; lots of options in that range.;)

The Yuasa or interstate (same thing) are definately on my list. I just got a wild hair up my a** and though I try this big cranker. I have stayed away from lithium because the have never had oem type posts and were wierd sizes. I also worried about non standard charging proceedures. I see dolt says they have a diret fit/ connect now. That is only $25 more than the braille I just bought. (agm) What is the story with charging these things?

The FL/FH Twin Power that shows for $299 was $224 on Amazon; 625CCA and spins my 10.4 static CR all bore 107 motor like a top. Battery Tender, Twin Power and Anti Gravity are the go to sources for "direct fit" lithium batteries. These brands cannot be charged with a charger for lead acid batteries. Battery Tender offers a charger that will charge either and that is the charger I bought for this battery. My other bikes are still on lead acid and on a conventional tender but will be phases out to lithium when the lead acid batteries die.Dual Charger.JPG

Well a lot has changed since I last looked into this. I will probably try lithium on the next go around....Thanks

You may wish to take a look at the regulator if changing to lithium batteries.
It appears the charge voltage is higher than lead-acid.

Ricks Electric has lithium compatible regulators

Thanks for the tip but no need; HD OEM regulator charge voltage is adequate; doesn't take much to keep these lithium batteries charged.;)
