Starter problems....

I have an 88 FXR and when I go to start her, the bendix is staying engaged (or sounds like it is) causing the whizzing sound. The only way I can stop it is to disconnect the battery. This happens whether it cranks over or not. The bendix itself appears to be in good condition. New battery, replaced solenoid, cables look good. Could it be the starter clutch, jackshaft, or electrical? I've even heard the brass washer on the bendix causing this kinda thing...
I'm thoroughly whooped on this one and I hope someone can help.....Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
Yes, it is probably the jackshaft sticking or the clutch. It could be the brass bushing in the primary cover, the sleeve in the inner primary or an issue with the jackshaft itself.
With the spark plugs out, you can remove the primary cover & hit the start button to see what is going on.
