I am thinking about installing crash bars (engine guards) on a 06 street bob. Dothey really help in a crash or are they just for looks?

They do very little in a crash, however if you drop or lay the bike over in a low speed mishap, they will save replacing a lot of parts.

Sssshhhhhh! Don't call them Crash Bars !! You'll get told off :D:D:D:D.
We call them Crash Bars in UK but most of the good folks on this site prefer to call them Engine Bars or Highway Bars. As Glider says it's probably a misnomer as they won't save a whole lot in a crash but they can protect important bits (including legs) in a low speed fall or ground-kiss.

You forgot mustache bars!:D

Or as BigLew says "Sparkler Bars"...but they do help prevent damage to your expensive bike. They just work, may mount footpegs for alternate foot position, or mounting driving lights. You can get them from Lindby, Kuryakin and others...also they prevent your leg from being trapped underneath the bike with several riders offering testimonials for that bit of information. They can also be finished in black besides the chrome you see often.
