tachometer works intermintant

At the beginning of this season my tachometer was only working occasionally. the more i rode it the problem corrected itself. I just returned from vacation (gone for two weeks) and the problem was re-appeared. It flutters and than stops working. Where should i begin the trouble shooting stage. I have shook the tach wires with no results. Sometimes when i turn the bike off, than back on again it will start to work than drop to zero and start to fludder.

Had a problem like this with a tach on my softail.Removing the lower chrome cover revealed a crack in plastic housing holding everything in place.
Id check that 1rst before removing everything else to chase bad wireing.

Odds are pretty fair that it is probably a bad ground, as most bikes had migrated to all electronic tach running off the ICM in conjunction with the TSM, but I would look into a schematic to be sure...

You might also try getting a battery tender and hooking it up when you are not riding the bike.
