tranny between gears

I have an issue that comes up from time to time. It seems when I am accelerating (hard) thru the gears sometimes it seems like I am getting the tranny between gears. For example it seems to get between 4th and 5th gear, like it was in neutral. Let out on the clutch after the shift and nothing. Fluid level seems OK in the primary and tranny.

Any ideas?

Check the position of the shifter lever itself on the spline where the peg is, it may be a bit too high and you aren't lifting high enough to hit the next gear completely. You may want to reposition it on the splined shaft for better lift/shift.

Remember your foot will move DOWN better than it moves up to upshift.

Ihave found (expert that I am :s) that when you are git'n it, you need to be more authoritative than normal, when shifting. I heard somewhere...that these are agricultural trannys. I guess that means that they are less refined than products from other mfgs.

Enjoy,

Check shift linkage, make sure it is all secure.

Check the shift levers to be sure they are not loose on the shafts, both at the front shift lever, and the lever on the transmission.

Make sure the clutch is adjusted properly.

If all of the above are good, check the adjustment of the shifter pawl. It is in the shop manual.

GOOD SUGGESTIONS ABOVE
SOME OTHERS have had the SAME problem .....MY SUGGESTION comes from OLD SCHOOL! TRY IT and if it works for you, get USED to doing it as it may become a permanent habit.. AND SHOULD...(old school taught)

AFTER ALL is adjusted properly, like mentioned above and ALL seems to be working FINE...
WHEN SHIFTING "UP" OR (down),,,,, CONTINUE TO HOLD SHIFT LEVER "UP"(down) FIRMLY IN THE SHIFTED POSITION,,,,,,,holding UNTIL THE CLUTCH IS LET OUT,,,,,,,, IT should go into the gear desired that it may NOT otherwise have... and THIS MAY(should) TAKE CARE OF IT......

??? did it shift into the gear???
If so,,, it is CLOSE to working RIGHT and may JUST need a little MORE tinkering...

I KNOW,,,, i know ,,,,you should NOT have to do this,,, the bike should shift GOOD the first time BUT.....HOPEFULLY only a few HAVE THIS PROBLEM.......

I always shift THIS way(holding firmly) REGARDLESS if shift is completed or not.....

another member here, on another thread said TODAY,,, he took some advice(mine) and it seemed to work by holding the shifter in the shift position(to first)... then letting clutch out and it WAS in or pulled in gear... where as before it MAY or NOT be in low gear. (.)

GRANTED ,,,,YOUR BIKE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE SHIFTED THIS WAY and should go into ALL gears if shifted properly....
....UNDER warranty,,, you can TRY to get it FIXED,,, ASK AND SEE.

I would NOT have a bike that didn't shift properly ESPECIALLY stock as I have kept it and harley has SOLD IT TO ME...(.)

I think FIRST, ALL adjustments NEED to be made.(corrected).
IF it doesn't shift properly like said I would believe the tolerances are OUT of WACK in-out-in-out and around the shift linkages and/or tranny.... probably BOTH
*****I'm not UP on the NEWER tranny's and don't know if you CAN adjust the shift mech-can-isums (sp?) inside LIKE the OLDER ONES?

*****WHERE's Chopper when you need HIM? ****He'll have an answer.....
