Ultra Classic - Windshield Gasket

I recently replaced my stock windshield with a Windvest. On the stock windshield I noticed that there was a piece of thin single-sided black foam tape across the base of the windshield on the front side. I'm guessing this was there to keep water from seaping into the fairing.

Is this something that is needed? I put the Windvest on with no tape, but if it is something that is needed I'll get a roll of single-sided foam tape and put some on.

I'm sure it has some qualities to keep the water out of the fairing but the main part is to cushion the point that the fairing and windshield contact each other and lessen movement between the two which could cause squeaks, abrasion and possibly cracking too.

Thanks glider, I'm going to add a piece of tape across the front just to be safe.
