working on a 2001 carbureted road king - the owner is concerned and it's not in the factory manual and was wondering if any of you guys would know what the voltage out put should be at idle (1,000 rpm's) - I noticed that on fuel injected bikes it puts out 13.5+, in 2001 the carbed bikes have a 38 amp charging system as opposed to the 45 amp system on the fuel injected bikes, I don't think the carbureted (38 amp)bikes put out as much - I'm trying to find out the numbers for the 38 amp system at idle (1,000 rpm's)- thanks for any info. -fxrs

Each system has a certain voltage it should produce per 1000 RPM.

The following is a list of the most common systems.

22 amp single phase = 24 VAC @ 1000 rpm

32 amp single phase = 18 VAC @ 1000 rpm

38 amp single phase = 18 VAC @ 1000 rpm

48 amp single phase = 24 VAC @ 1000 rpm

36 amp three phase = 16 VAC @ 1000 rpm

50 amp three phase 18 VAC @ 1000 rpm

Set your meter to read AC volts. Unplug the stator from the regulator. Start the motor. On a single-phase system, connect one lead from the meter to each pin on the stator plug. Hold the motor at a steady RPM and read the tachometer and the voltmeter.
