Broken Bolt

Is that a misspelling on compensator bowl? Should it be Bolt?

I thought it was a misspelling also but just found this.

Why would you ride 5 miles with a grinding sound? That seams on the side of extremely dangerous!

I didnt hear anything, my son did.

Just now saw this thread. I have heard of this happening, even all of them at one time, course there is no telling if they broke one at a time and were not noticed it until the last one. I always pre-ride these bolts but even that is not a guarantee. Guess it's a good thing when they shear off instead of locking up the wheel. It's amazing that they do shear considering that they are grade 8 bolts OEM. It's my guess the cush drive rubber was damaged by something, but again maybe just a stealer. As Hoople said ask for your parts.

I have had issues with at rear wheel not as bad as your problem. My rear brake disc was bent when had tire changed on a road trip on next tire change bolts had not been installed correctly.

Harleys service manauls on tire change tells you remove the pulley and brake disc.

If no Lock Tite was used bolts could back off or not torqued correctly. Also if bolts and inserts on wheel were not cleaned new Lock Tite does not hold as well when old stuff is still there.

I have seen people using tap to clean threads in some cases this can damage threads Snap On does make a Rethreading Kit if used will less likely to damage oringal threards.

If you have the damaged bolts go to another dealer make sur they are correct.

Great pictures. Have never seen anything quite like it. I am amazed you did not hear any early warning signs before she totally let go. To me, those bolts had to be loose to start with. (?)
You can see where they were rocking.

Only touring models have that pulley setup. 07 was a separate purchase and 08 was stock from the factory.
