Dreams, I rode to the 48 lower states this summer, plus 6 Canadian provinces. I did this on an Ultra, because I'm an old guy and like my creature comforts. However, I also have a Street Bob that I ride locally. I actually prefer the Street Bob for it's handling and performance. I have a set of saddlebags, a Bikers Friend roll case for a backrest and added storage, and a windshield on it. I rode this for several trips prior to buying the Ultra. There is absolutely nothing wrong with touring on something besides an Ultra. It all depends on what you can afford, and your desired comfort level. Make sure that whatever you get, that it is in good condition, you maintain it regularly, and that you have enough basic knowledge, tools and parts to get you to the next town. With a trip like yours, you will see a lot of desolate areas, so be a good scout and be prepared. I also carry a cell phone when my brain/skills aren't up to the task.
