Consideration when looking at bikes with 96ci or greater

This issue is always in the back of my mind. I have an 07 FXDC (that I love dearly) and have about 5,000 miles on it.

If the crank runout problem happens, how much money are we talking about? No warranty coverage for me.

I'm afraid to hear the answer, but better to have realistic info than to keep worrying about.

Anybody have an idea of cost?

Thanks,
Jimmy

If u catch the prob before it takes out the oil pump and trashes the rest of the motor. The flywheel/crank asembly alone is $800 by itself plus gaskets and what ever else u decide to rebuild while have the motor opened up. If u got to replace the motor a remanned motor will cost u around $4k installed with a 12 month waranty.

sounds like i might have gotten lucky not buying the newer one i wanted , had to go where the was able to take . still have the depenable but slower shovel in the shed yet .guns and bikes i keep them all

Actually, If you catch it before you tear it up, you can have your existing crank trued and tig welded for about $150.
There is no need to purchase a new crank as long as none of the bearing surfaces are damaged. It would take a bunch of runout before that would happen. The key is to catch it early.

It's a bunch of labor to pull it out and install it. Plus of course you have a couple of hundred in gaskets/bearings/rings etc etc.
If you did all the labor yourself,, (sent out the crank,) I bet you can pull it off for $500.
That is having no damage and just wanting to lock up the crank.

Best time to do it would be during a big bore kit & cams...:p

Just came back from a 4692 mile run to Sturgis and Colorado. While enroute to my home I began to feel that clunk through the footpegs. This thread raised my concern so I did a cut and paste and took it to my dealer. I inquired about the run out issues and the service tech said they had never heard of it. I then produced the copies of what I took from this site. I left it with them. They said they would look it up on their Harley site. They came back a few minutes later and said there was nothing there about it.
Does anyone know if Harley has put out any service bulletins or notices on this topic. If so, how do you go about obtaining a copy ?

They play dumb all the time, if you have to call the MOCO, I had a similar problem with the steering head and showed them the tech bulletin OH then they fessed up imagine that. I dont understand why they dont want to do warranty work, they get paid for it once it is ok by THE MOCO JMO

that is starange they say they have never heard of the issue one of the two dealers i deal with here says they no it is a prob and have had a couple of bike come threw with the problem admit harley could solve the prob by just welding the cranks and the other dealer knows about the problem but says they have yet to see any bikes it has happen to. Both told me they could check my bike for crank run out but if iam wroung it would cost me $450-$500. So at this point I Wouldnt mind paying the 450 to find out my crank is fine and the vibration or buzz is all in my head but i dont wont to pay that and find out i got .011 in.of runout and they arnt goin to do anything about it because it still within spec. I am either gonna wait till Iam closer to the end of my waranty so i might be over the run out spec or see about getting a hold of the gauge and checkin it myself. I have never done any motor cycle engine work but have had my hands in lots of chevy engines and betwwen reading the entire engine section in the service manual and the info and good people on this site i think i could handle it.
