Took bike to dealer today. They checked everything including the neck. Only thing they could come up with is what you had mentioned, that the discs float. Could not get the noise to reappear and have not noticed it for the last 100 miles or so.
Service and techs at Hannums Harley were very helpful and gave the problem their full attention even though that could not find a problem. So maybe the pads just needed to break in.
