How many 06 dyna owners had failed Alt/stator/pulley assy

As for me, I have an 06 Street Bob, and so far so good, although it did not have much mileage when I got it and this year has been a light riding season, so just approaching 7K miles. Any indication as to when this might happen?

no, so i heard mine was all of sudden 29k but if i had heard of it before i would have had welded the screws or went with the SE kit like hoople and glider stated earler

Hi All:
Please read my post in the "2006 Dyna inner primary bearing problem?" thread, as it also has important info regarding the stator/rotor issues.
Thanks much,

I have a 2006 Dyna Street Bob.

Last summer I felt a slight stutter and heard a clunk at the front of the motor. I thought I may have run over a bolt or something. After parking and restarting the bike I got an engine light warning.

My Rotor threw all eight of the bolts. Wrecked the stator too.
$1000 later I have a welded rotor. HD doesn't even sell the bolted rotor anymore. THEY KNOW IT IS A PROBLEM!

This is a safety related issue in my mind and there should have been a RECALL!!!!!!!

Mine went the same way; only I had two warning signs that I ignored because the noise went away after the engine warmed up. On two occasions when I first started the bike I heard a slight clicking/clacking noise. This was from a bolt backing out and coming in contact with the stator. The noise went away shortly (the bolt backing out all the way and getting stuck to a magnet) so I just ignored it. When the last bolt finally backed out, I heard a "Ping" - I thought I ran over something. A few seconds later the engine light goes on. Problem is when the bolts back out all the way; they're attracted to the magnets in the rotor. This is a good and bad thing. It keeps the bolts from flying around inside the primary, but then it's hard to tell that something's wrong until the last bolt backs out and the rotor comes loose from the compensator spring assembly. The thing I learned was trust your ears. If you hear a strange noise coming from the engine, she’s trying to tell you something.
Regarding a recall – I heard that HD does not consider this a safety issue therefore no recall. I suppose they calculated that at least half the people are going to repair it themselves, or have they’re local dealer do the work, and they’d make money off of parts sales. BTW, HD WILL pay for the repair IF you make enough noise.

Well I have been lurking on here for a while, and as a owner of a 06 Street bob with 11k miles I have been reading up on all the problems you guys have been having and got thinking I better tear into mine to check both my IPB and stator rotor bolts before I start riding this season. Well I took it apart tonight and I am glad to report no problem with either as of now. Bolts in rotor are as tight as can be and IPB is fine! As a professional auto mechanic this job was very easy for me to do and I will just check them both at the beginning of each season from now on. My bike was built in 3/06 so maybe they got it right by the end of the model year!! What were the build dates on the bikes that have come apart? I also talked with my local dealer as well as two independent shops and none of them have ever heard of or seen these problems with 06 dyna's. :dknow

They only "got it right" when they produced a welded rotor for later 2006 models. The 07's and later all have the welded rotor.

Some on here have welded the nuts on with a small tack weld. I'm not sure checking the torque on these bolts will guarantee they will not come loose.

And I would say your local HD dealer is either lying or has seen very few 2006 Dynas.

Has any one tried putting an epoxy compound on the threads of the 8 screws like JB Weld to keep them from backing out?

Rob
