2004+ Harley used a Delphi style ignition... The data bus is j1850 NOT tach friendly! The best way to hook up a tach with the LEAST amount of problems... (I have tried) is to buy a tc88a ignition module which has a ISOLATED regular tach output!
A lot o tach pick up interference from the data bus or other gremlins! They usually don't read correctly on the 2004+ bikes I have tried 3 different tach with mixed results.
Best option I found was the tc88a with a dedicated output. Also you can adjust the vss for you bike or tire or gear changes! And also I can supply u with a custom ignition map.
