I believe it stems from the old west...you always mount your horse from the left and the rest is history

I agree! I liken myself to the cowboys in the old west and the SG as my steel horse. Been mounting bikes from the left side for the past 27 yrs. It just feels right, but I don't think it really matters.

When I had a kick start Shovel I mounted from the right; now that I am lazy and have a starter I mount from the left.
