To remove the clear coat, you can wet sand it with a very fine wet and dry paper used wet, buff it off with a power buffer or use a paint remover, then you have to polish the aluminum to a luster.

When i wanted to get my engine covers all nice and shiny i used paint stripper to remove the clear coat
simple brush on leave it for a wee while clear should bubble then remove with a plastic scraper
some bits i had removed i used a bench polisher and different grades of mops and compounds till happy then new clear and back on the bike
