Rider Backrest Question

There are some staples under the flap on the back. You can remove them and get to the internal bolting (nuts). You should be able to remove them and the spring and then remove the parts you need to cut down. I need to do the same thing.

I found that I had a broken spring in my backrest this past fall when my backrest flopped forward and the busted spring fell out. I made a spring that looks like it will work but I'm not sure how it hooks into the backrest since my old one fell out. Can anybody tell me where the spring hooks onto? And are there supposed to be two springs in the backrest or just one?
