I hope the family is well.
That is pretty interesting about the inconsistencies in the hardware you found. I will definitely check any hardware I have to replace from now on. I have minor control issues (just ask the Mrs.) and the thought of holding handlebars that aren't firmly attached to the rest of my bike while riding down the road is not cool.

There was an item on Headline news today about a company building/selling
"tornado proof" homes. Frame work is steel I-beams. Several of the close ups showed "ungraded" bolts holding it together. I'd opt for upgraded bolts.
