With an eye loop and a good light you can still read the heat rings on the plug, it is a lot harder now with out the lead that added color to the plugWell somebody is probably going to say I'm just to old school but I will put my .02c in anyway. Here is the way I was taught to read a sparkplug when I was racing motocross. First install new plug(s). Next run the bike up to 50 to 60mph, and hold it steady for 5 to 10 min. Next chop the throttle closed pull in the clutch and turn off ignition and bring the bike to a quick stop. Remove the plugs quickly and read, you're looking for tan and no deposits. I have also read recently from a "wise" member here on the forum, that with the introduction of ethanol it is almost impossible to get a good read on plugs no matter how you do it.
