It happens to me as well. Only if I start the bike in gear. You can upgrade the comp. sprocket or just make sure the bike is in neutral before engaging start switch. When funds allow I plan on replacing the comp. sprocket and clutch basket with the screaming eagle one. For now I just make sure it's in neutral and haven't had the problem.

millage wise how soon should one upgrade to stronger one or how long will stock compensater last guess or estimate tx tom

I would upgrade as soon as you can , I wish I upgraded sooner instead of waiting .

I would imagine that the stock compensator will last until the end of the warranty and then they will start to break down.

good i have 19 months left. ill change before that though this winter....
