Switching From Dino to Syn in a Car?

I don't know how to put it but if I were you Dr. I'd stick with dino oil, as Glider have said M1 give you more protection but does it worth it?. My 96 Honda with 207K + stills running strong, my wife 03 Lexus get 45K + and my 05 Ram truck is only 18K, they are all use dino oil (Castrol) and none of them developing any problem, I keep them as of interval recommended per owner manual.

On the other hand, I have seen new cars/trucks with M1 that have engine failured due to something else, like internal failure and or lack of oil due to bad seal and lost all the oil, I also seen people with higher mileages switching over from dino to synt and vise versus, some have problem with and some not but I don't think that was caused by switching oil type.

Most of new car/truck today use M1 syn(5w20) right from factory and the interval recommend is still the same as of dino oil, I think it's because the new design with tighter tolerences and different in meterial that are benefit from M1 rather than dino oil. Just a though.

Spoke with the tech rep from Mobil and here's his recommendations:

1)Stay with conventional oil in my Volvo with 130,000 miles and my Ford Escort with 100,000 miles
2) Switch to Mobil 1 in my Hyundai with 55,000 miles and my Ford Mustang with 37,000 miles but keep a close eye initially for any leaks

He felt like 100,000 miles was the "magic" point where it's probably best not to switch. He also emphasized that the synthetics do not CAUSE oil leaks through the seals but their superior cleaning and ability to move within the engine 7 times faster than conventional oil will expose any faulty seal that previously existed and was being masked by the old oil's sludge effect.

Since I'm no oil engineer I'm going to try his recommendations and watch the two lower mileage cars for any problems.

Will let you know how it goes if anyone's interested.

Hmmmmm, smart guy!:D Sounds familiar.:s

Well as a kid, my Dad taught me to change my engine oil every 1,500 miles! I know that sounds crazy but I have 276,000 miles on my 1976 Chevy truck. In my humble opinion that is the secret to engine life! Again, I am no expert but I will keep the family tradition going strong the rest of my days! I use havoline 10-40.

Dude, it's amazing your Dad ever found the time to have children! Then again, under the right circumstances, a garage or driveway can be VERY romantic! :s

Good oil and even greater practice to change the oil like that.

I have a 2004 Z71 Surburban with 250K miles, use the Mobil syn, no leaks, change it at about 7.5K each time no problems and picked up about 1mpg over dino oil. But I do a lot of highway miles on with not much stop/go in town driving. Had a Jeep Cherokee before that went 300k, same Mobil oil, still going strong, never had the valve covers off. It is the "old" stright 6 that they "improved" by going to a V6 which I understand has some issues.....if it ain't broke, don't fix it.........
