i think what Bud is saying is that you remove the entire chrome strap bracket, discard it, and bolt the new strap on just using the saddlebag bracket.

no, this is great! now i know exactly what to do, thanks to you guys.
better to do it once & do it right, than do it by guessing and do it wrong.
but, boy, those HD instructions make me feel like an idiot.
