I contacted Harley to see if they would do anything for me. They told me there is a possiblity they will do something for me even though my warrenty is expired...I would have to book it in to my local dealer and they would have to verify its broken and then take it from there.. well its 2 and half weeks to get an appointment at the dealer and then most likely I feel they won't do anything which leaves me with a couple hours labor and probably a month of no riding soooo...... I found a ring gear on ebay and ordered it.. my pinion is nicked up a bit on my starter.. but apparently the pinion is obsolete from the dealers... harley is only selling the complete starter.. the only parts you can get is the solenoid rebuild kit.. so I'm going to order a starter on ebay also.. I got the ring gear for less than 1/3rd the price of the dealers.. and the starters on there are much the same.. I decieded this was the best route.. I almost did go ahead and take my ring gear to a local welding and machine shop to try and repair it.. but I didnt have a whole lot of faith in it lasting the next ten years.. Now it could last 100 years.. I'll probably never know..
as for what caused it.. bearings all look good.. nothing looks out of alignment.. ill check my timing when I get her running again..but she ran fine.. Im guessing it was just a bad ring gear.. or the starter getting juiced a few times while it was running
