Do yourself a favor and use a gear oil in the trans. 20/50 is for engines, not gears (even the Amsoil regardless of what they say in the white sheets)

question for glider i have a sporty and the primary and tranny use same fluid so what would u recommend for it. right now i have amsoil in both holes

that post contradicts it self. it say no one oil is good for primary and trans but the sportster uses the same oil in primary and trans so what do u use .they are all one unit so i dont know what to use if u r not to use same oil from engine in trans. But it says any 10-40 is good for primary but is it good for trans.quite confused on what to use in the primary and trans

Did you read this part? The post pertained to big twins mostly.

Sharky1948 here on HDT checked with Ken about the best choice for sportsters and was told for his '07 XL1200C he recommended the GL1 75W140 over the 6 speed oil with the extra additives because they would not agree with the clutches being the trans and primary share the same oil. He also said " that while the GL1 wouldn't do any damage, the GPCL was formulated for the purpose and that is what they recommend. "
The GPCL is listed on their web site as "Heavy Duty Gold Primary Chain case Lube/Transmission Lubricant and is the ideal choice for all Big Twin and Sportster chain cases "

thankx glider will pick a bottle of that up for the primary wasnt to keen on running amsoil in both motor and primary but was told it wouldnt hurt it .but the more i read the more i wanted to put something in it designed for the primary and tranny combination but all i got told from every one around this area is u could use it in both with no problem and thanks again

My current ride “Seabiscuit’ came from the garage of a millionaire, talk about culture shock to the poor thing. But he is in addition to being multi business owner, works as an Oil Research and Development Specialist. And when I flew to Fla to pick up the bike he picked me up at the airport in Naples and talked techno stuff I have no idea what spewed out of him for an hour ride about oil,, quantum this, elasticity of molecular that,, but bottom line is he used Amsoil, I figure, ok. One interesting thing I did not know was oil can be too slick for a Harley. It has to have some fancy “tach” quality or the bearing race can spin around the shaft, and the actual bearings not be working and you can clearly see the problem there. He said HD oil was the worst in all his findings, in every category of every test,, but that is the oil I’ve always used since 1973, with no oil related issues. But I now use Amsoil since that’s all that’s ever been in Seabiscuit, so far so good.:bigsmiley28:
