Running Plates

Aren't there insurance issues too about not being licensed? Seems to me I heard that they can deny coverage if you have the bike insured but are driving without an operator's permit and get into an accident.

Can't really remember the specifics on that. But another reason to make yourself legal.

I wasn't licence for years of riding back in the early of '80, I just "exchange" my permit yearly and it was perfectly legal and my insurance is ok with that, got my licence 4-5 years ago when I got back to riding.

Only problem with rolling a permit over is in most states a permit rider has to have a properly licensed MC rider with them when they ride. If you get caught without one, it's the same as riding without a permit.

In PA, you don't have to have another licensed rider to ride with as long as you are not "carring a passenger" (riding two up) and not before and or after sun rise/set.

I don't agree with the law that you have to have a "special" endorsement or license to ride a motorcycle, but I have one anyway. It's far less hassle to go with the flow sometimes, and sometimes rebellion just isn't the answer. In Washington State where I live they made it sound like a good idea to pass and endorsement law by saying that all the money would go to motorcycle safety and training:pelao Yeah Right!
The reason I don't agree with the law is because it makes no sense. If you have to have a special endorsement/license to ride a bike then it should apply to everyone. everyone should have a different type of license for what they drive. One for a car, one for a van, one for a pickup or SUV. How Many people out there took a test in little 4 banger type car and now are driving around in Jacked up 4X4 SUV with over sized tires and a big push bar on the front to make sure when they run into something they destroy what they ran into with minimal damage to their own rig.
I don't think people should have to pay to take the test to get the license to drive/ride what they ride (unless they fail once) But I think we should all be able to prove we are capable of driving, handling and controlling what we take on the roads that we have to share with millions of other.

All good points and well taken in context of personal opinion, but the law is pretty rigid and any argument contrary to "representatives" of our enforcement and justice system will not bode well if you try to push them! No one said that Democracy or our Legal system was totally fair or free...:newsmile107:

Say what you will, there's a huge difference between going from one size car to another, and going from a car to a motorcycle.

There is consistency of a sort in the 4 wheel world as well. The State draws a distinction between driving a car and driving a semi, and requires the appropriate endorsement.

I am with several of the others. Get legal and you have no worries. While I don't agree with all the laws in all the states, I do make an attempt to keep the obvious things in compliance.

If you own a bike and care enough about riding and lurking here... GET YOUR ENDORSEMENT ... what's the problem? I agree with some of the other post, do not always agree with some of the rules but enjoy riding my bike and we ride a lot and it's not worth the fines and insurance points here. Same with the helmets, must be DOT approved or risk ticket with insurance points. On occasion we have come up to a driver's license check... meaning looking for drunk drivers. If you happen to come around a curve and find this down the road trying making a u turn.. there is always a police..highway patrol car there just for that reason... not worth the effort to run illegal.

60%! More than I would have ever thought. Wonder what the penalty is for riding without the endorsement??

In the State of Ohio riding without an endorsement is:-(from the Ohio Sate Bar Association)

"Generally, most traffic offenses are minor misdemeanors. The penalty for a minor misdemeanor is a fine of up to $150. However, if you have had more than one moving violation within the past 12 months, your offense may be enhanced to a more serious misdemeanor offense with more serious penalties, including potential jail time."
