Things You Should Never Use On Or Do To Your Bike.

Its been a few years since I performed the disk lock trick. I use a coiled orange wire lead specifically made for the same purpose from the lock to the brake lever. I think you can pick them up at most dealers.

I have a question i hope some one can help with. I live in ohio and we get the snow & ice treat every year . The road crews put down a mix of grit and salt, sometimes just salt brine.
I usually put the bikes away as soon as i see them putting the stuff down. I dont usually ride much in the winter anymore , but there are a few events i hate to miss, polar bear ride etc.
My bikes are kept in a storage locker across the street from a open car wash. So for the lastfew years when i got back i would go over and spray the bike down . Bottom to top and then top to bottom. The trip to the locker is maybe 100 yards. When i get inside i try to wipe the bike down to dry, problem is by riding season i have a lot of corrosion to deal with. Does anyone know of some kind of a pre spray. Or should i just deal with it , maybe get an old beater bike? Any thoughts / help would be greatly appriecated.

Hi Hawgazam,

Take a look at this thread:
Anti-corrosion Spray - Harley Davidson Community
I was checking this out recently. I bought some for my Sporty and as Smitty says - it buffs up nicely and continues to protect. I don't aim to ride throught salt if I can avoid but I'll be using this stuff over the winter. :D

I was running late for work one day , uncovered bike , loaded my belongings fired up bike let it run for a miunte or so jumped on to take off and instead ended up on my side. The bike only had a thousand or so miles as it was my new bike, my first brand new electraglide classic. The cause of course was the very effective disc lock. I like the lock very much so i found some plastic covered wire that happeened to be orange and was loosely coiled put one nnd on lock , and when i use it i pull the other to the throttle or ign. Switch.. Havent forgot it since.
Another thing i see some riders do at a stop they will be centered behind the car or trk. In front of them, and in my mind at least, a bit too close. I was taught to stay back a bit further and slightly pointed from out around the veh. In frnt. +++keep an eye on whats coming up on you , if its not stopping you might have a shot out of a bad situation by moving around the car your behind.
Good advice Hawgazam regarding not being directly behind the vehicle in front of you. During my short stint as a UPS driver we were taught to "Leave yourself an out". Like you said, if something is coming up on us we want to be able to leave ourselves a bit of room to maneuver if possible.

Washing, Meguiars Gold Class
Polishing, Gold Class Wax
Chrome, Mothers Chrome Polish

Microfibre Cloth to polish chrome and paint, and clean after use for next polish job.

I haven't tried Mother polish, anyone used it.

For chrome rims, I use a lambswool duster before I go anywhere near them with a cloth.
A cloth may pick up some sandy dust and scatch them.
Carefull using microfiber cloth around hot exhaust, I am going to have to try the easy off because of that.

Just use the Mr. Clean wash system. Has great spray soft soap and water filters for spot free rinse. I have lots of chrome and have never had to towel dry or scrap bugs. Cleans and dries spot free. :newsmile047:

Don't use any cleaner containing chlorine on aluminum..IE royal purple, it will dull the finish. If you must use a cleaner... Non-chlorinated, rinse then "Pledge it".

Do use a clay bar on your bike once a year. It will remove contanimates from your clear coat and leave you with a deep luxury paint scheme. Follow up with a coat of wax and your lookin' good!

I once bought tire valve caps in the auto parts store, they had indicators in the end of the cap via a tube red, green , amber, each color gives you a visual read of tire pressure by color, for example if green was showing it meant you have between 28 and 36 psi, amber maybe 20 to 28 and so on. I thought great I can easily tell if I become low on tire pressure just by a quick look at the tire, Maybe this product is car specific I dont know, because one day on the parkway going to work the bike started becoming difficult to manuvere after coming thru the toll plaza, when I got to the right side of the road I discovered I had two flat tires, the end of the valves were blown off, and the indicators gone, wow was that bike heavy to try and turn with no air in the tires. Im guessing I must have hit a pothole or bump in the road causing a burst of pressure to blow it out, but honestly nothing noteable, anyway I had a friend come out with an airtank and fill up the tires with no problems. the auto parts store gave me back my money, but this definitely shouldnt be on a bike. :bigsmiley29:
