I told the parts guy at my local Harley dealership that I was going to use Bel Ray in my transmission and he looked at me like I had a booger. He said that Bel Ray was too thick and it would cause my gears to wear. I have used Harley Synthetic in all three holes since.... Looks to be time for a change.

Sounds like the typical parts guy, knows little about much. Use a gear oil in the trans.
 
I have used redline since i build my bike in 99 been happy with it but i switched to spectro gl5 last week and i can tell you when its cold out around 25 in the morning it shifts alot better im sold on it,jel
 
I just wanted to add here that for any of you N.W. Indiana riders North End Cycle in Elkhart carries the full line of Spectro oils at a reasonable price
 
Just switched to Spectro 6-spd and noticed a big difference, smooth shifting,less clunking, quieter/quiet 5th gear.Thanks for the advice.
