Motorcycle Adventure, Day 19
Greetings from Goldendale, Washington! It has been cold the last couple of days and today was no exception. All the gear went on, but there was not a cloud in the sky. Riding conditions were perfect. So much so that I did not stop when I should have. The sun was at my back and the views were something I couldn’t pass up. Having never been to Oregon, I am duly impressed. The roads are in great condition and the scenery will make your eyes hurt. I didn’t check into a motel until 2000, so I have had a full day. 415 miles today, 5776 thus far on the adventure. Everyone I have spoken to said the weather has been horrible for weeks. I reckon I brought ‘em good luck! I stopped in Crescent, OR for breakfast and laid the maps out trying to figure out where to go today. I decided Mount Hood would make a good excursion so I went to Bend, OR and hooked a left on Hwy 20. Upon reaching the town of Sisters, the traffic was terrible and I couldn’t figure out why. Well, they are having a rodeo and obviously they take rodeos seriously out here because the town was completely packed with cowboys, cowgirls, horses, fifth wheel campers and horse trailers. They sure do dress fancy for a rodeo too! I finally made it past a detour and proceeded up Hwy 22 to Detroit, OR. I met a couple of riders at the gas pump and they recommended Hwy 224. After riding it, I can see why. It was absolutely magnificent. I have never seen such greenery, probably from all the rain they have been having. The Deschutes National Forest and Cascade Range were unbelievable. There was a 25 mile shortcut that would take me to Hwy 216 and that is where I first laid eyes on Mount Hood. It didn’t do me much good because I went north on Hwy 35 when I should have gone three miles further west on 216 to get to the timber lodge. I spent a couple of hours riding back roads and taking pictures before I learned of my mistake from a park ranger. I went back to where I should have been and it was certainly worth it. Then I headed back to where I had originally been and saw a car on fire on the side of the road. I checked with the people that had gotten out to make sure nobody was in it and proceeded on to Hood River. I should have stopped prior to that, but I couldn’t. I headed east on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge until I knew it was now or never to get a room for the night. I got lucky and found Goldendale and an available room. It is a great motel, so I may try and sleep in tomorrow and get my money’s worth. Pictures to follow.
